Child care is one of the biggest costs families face. Colorado offers several programs and tax credits that can lower the cost — here's where to start.
Four ways Colorado helps with the cost
CCCAP — Child Care Assistance
The Colorado Child Care Assistance Program helps eligible families who are working, in school, or job-searching pay for child care. Eligibility and waitlists are set county by county.
Universal Preschool (UPK)
Every Colorado child is eligible for tuition-free preschool hours the year before kindergarten — with more hours for families who qualify.
Tax credits for families
Families may qualify for the Colorado Child Tax Credit and the Family Affordability Tax Credit — refundable credits that put money back in your pocket at tax time, even if you owe no taxes.
Child & Dependent Care Credit
If you pay for child care so you can work or look for work, the federal and Colorado Child & Dependent Care credits can offset part of what you spend. Ask a tax preparer or use a free filing service.
A closer look at CCCAP
What it is: The Colorado Child Care Assistance Program (CCCAP) helps families with lower incomes pay for child care so parents can work, attend school, or search for a job.
Who may qualify: Each county sets its own income limits, but counties must serve families earning at or below 185% of the federal poverty guideline, and may serve families up to 85% of the state median income. Families in Colorado Works may also qualify.
Good to know: Some counties keep a waitlist or pause new enrollment, so apply early. Once approved, contact your county to authorize your chosen provider before care begins.
How to apply: Apply online or through your county department of human/social services.
The Real Issue Right Now: Many counties statewide are on freezes or waitlists for this program. Apply and the county you are in will notify you of their status.
